Mark Glavina
The art of visual communication preoccupied and motivated Mark Glavina from an early age. From a large family with six siblings, there was no shortage of verbal communication growing up. As the second youngest in the family, getting a word in edgewise was a formidable task. At a young age drawing and painting proved to be both a way to express feelings and emotions as well establish an identity in a large family. As it turns out, two of Mark's siblings chose careers in the visual arts and one in the performance arts, as evidence of the creative influence of both Mother and Father.
Mark studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Capilano College and has worked as a teacher and illustrator with various contracts including background painting for animation. As well, he has established a reputation as a muralist. In the 90's Mark turned to developing his own fine art, exploring environmental and cultural issues, as well as working with the figure and portrait.
Mark has traveled with his wife Roxanne through Europe, Australia, Asia, the West Indies, and North and Central America. Mark and Roxanne have settled in Steveston, British Columbia with their two daughters Arianne and Dominique.
In 1996 Mark opened his first retail location, Phoenix Coastal Arts, dedicated to the stimulation of the Arts in the beautiful and historically rich fishing community of Steveston. In 2001 he opened a larger second location, The Phoenix Art Workshop, offering art education to young people and adults, as well as developing a support system for the local art community. Mark continues to work and develop his own art while at the same time developing a strong teaching network through the workshop and the school system. Mark has worked with the local schools developing art programs, murals and public art projects.
